The "That Girl" Summer Reset Routine

Let me tell you about a specific kind of morning I kept having last summer.

I would wake up already behind. Phone in hand before my eyes had even fully adjusted to the light. Scrolling through other people's mornings before I had even started my own. By the time I got up, made chai, and looked around at the mess of my room, it was already 10 AM and the heat had arrived and the day felt somehow already wasted even though nothing had technically happened yet.

You know that feeling? Like the day started without you?

That was me, most of last summer. And the worst part was that I kept watching all these "that girl" videos on YouTube and Pinterest girl waking up at 6, journaling with perfect handwriting, green juice, workout, glowing skin, clean apartment and I would think, okay but that is not real life. That is a New York girl with a ring light and a whole production team behind her Tuesday morning.

But somewhere between dismissing the aesthetic and completely having no routine, I was losing entire days to nothing. And nothing is a terrible way to spend a summer.

So I built my own version. Not the aesthetic version. Not the green juice version. A real, honest, morning-to-night routine that actually works for a regular girl who lives in the real world hot summers, real responsibilities, real low-energy days included.

This is that routine. Take what fits your life and leave what does not. But I think more of it will fit than you expect.

✨ Save this before you keep scrolling you will want to come back to this one.

1. Wake Up Before The World Gets Loud

I am not going to tell you to wake up at 5 AM. I am going to tell you to wake up before your particular world gets loud and only you know when that is.

For me it is before the house wakes up, before the messages start, before the heat settles in and makes everything feel heavy. That window however long it lasts is genuinely the most valuable part of the day. It is the only time that belongs completely to you before everyone else's needs, noise, and energy start competing for your attention.

The "that girl" routine is not really about waking up early. It is about waking up intentionally. Knowing why you are getting up. Having something to get up for. Even if that something is just thirty minutes of quiet before the chaos starts.

Set your alarm tonight for thirty minutes earlier than usual. Not an hour. Not two hours. Thirty minutes. See what that window feels like when you actually use it instead of sleeping through it.

2. Protect Your First Thought Like It’s Private Property

This is the one I fought the hardest and the one that changed the most once I actually did it.

No phone for the first fifteen minutes after waking up. Not to check messages. Not to check anything. Just you, the morning, and your own brain before you hand it over to everyone else's content.

Here is what I noticed when I started doing this: I actually had thoughts of my own in the morning. Ideas. Plans. Things I wanted to do that day. Creative thoughts I had never had before because I had always drowned them out with scrolling before they had a chance to surface.

The first thing you consume in the morning sets the tone for your entire mental state for hours. Start with your own thoughts and you start the day inside yourself. Start with your phone and you start the day inside everyone else their news, their highlight reels, their problems, their energy.

Choose yourself first. Just fifteen minutes. It sounds small. It is not small.

3. Wake Your Skin Up Not With Noise, With Intention

Not as a skincare step. Not as part of a routine you read about. Just as a signal a physical, immediate signal to your brain that sleep is over and the day has genuinely started.

There is something about cold water on your face in the morning that no alarm can replicate. It snaps you into the present moment. It is impossible to feel half-asleep and groggy after cold water hits your face. Your body wakes up whether it wants to or not.

Follow it up with a tall glass of water before anything else before chai, before breakfast, before anything. Your body has been without water for however many hours you slept. Give it what it actually needs first before you give it what you want.

This two-minute combination cold water on your face, water in your body is the simplest, cheapest, most effective morning reset that exists. And it works every single time.

4. Move Your Body Not For The Aesthetic

I do not care what it looks like. I care that you do it.

Ten minutes of stretching. A short walk. A YouTube video you follow along with in your room with the door closed. Dancing to three songs. Whatever gets you moving in a way that feels honest rather than performative.

The "that girl" version of this is a 6 AM gym session with matching sets and a post-workout smoothie. The real version is just moving your body before the day starts because it changes your entire chemistry. Your mood shifts. Your energy lifts. The day feels more like something you are actively living rather than something happening to you.

You do not need equipment. You do not need a gym membership. You do not need a perfect space. You need ten minutes and the willingness to move before your brain talks you out of it.

5. Find Your One Sharp Hour And Protect It Like It Is Everything

sharp hour

Every single person has a window in their day when their brain is just sharper. More focused. More capable of doing real, deep, meaningful work. For some people it is mid-morning. For others it is late afternoon. For me it shifts depending on the season and how well I slept.

Figure out when yours is. And then this is the important part protect it. Do not fill it with errands, messages, easy tasks, or things that could be done at any time. Use it for the one thing that actually matters. The thing you keep pushing to later. The work, the project, the writing, the studying, the building whatever that thing is for you.

One focused hour of real work beats four hours of distracted, half-effort work every single time. And most people never experience what they are actually capable of because they waste their sharpest hour on the easiest tasks and save the hard work for when they are already exhausted.

Do not be most people.

6. Eat A Real Meal Sitting Down, Phone Nowhere Near You

eat real meal

I know this sounds almost too simple to make a list about resetting your life. But hear me out.

How many times have you eaten lunch standing in the kitchen, half-distracted, barely tasting anything, phone in the other hand? How many times has a meal been something you just got through rather than something you actually had?

The "that girl" reset is not just about your morning. It is about how you treat yourself all day. And eating a proper meal cooked or assembled, real food, eaten sitting down without a screen is one of the most direct acts of self-respect that exists.

It does not have to be elaborate. It just has to be intentional. Sit down. Eat slowly. Actually taste what you made. Give your body fifteen minutes of real attention in the middle of the day. You will be surprised how much it changes the second half of your afternoon.

7. Romanticize Your Slow Hour Stop Feeling Guilty About It

The afternoon slump is real. Your body temperature actually dips in the early afternoon and your brain genuinely slows down. This is not laziness. This is biology. And fighting it by forcing yourself to be productive during it is one of the least efficient things you can do.

So here is what the reset looks like instead: schedule it. Actually put a slow hour in your day on purpose. Rest intentionally. Read something light, lie down without your phone, sit somewhere comfortable and just exist for a while.

The difference between resting on purpose and collapsing into your phone out of exhaustion is enormous both in how you feel during it and how you feel after. One is a choice that recharges you. The other is a habit that drains you more.

Rest is not something you earn after you have been productive enough. It is part of the routine. Build it in and stop apologizing for needing it.

Romanticize Your Slow Hour

8. Reset Your Space Before Your Evening Starts

Ten minutes. That is all this takes and it changes everything about how your evening feels.

Before you sit down to relax, before you start whatever you are doing with your evening spend ten minutes putting your physical space back in order. Dishes in the sink, not on the desk. Clothes off the floor and back where they belong. Things put away, surfaces cleared, space reset.

Your environment is a direct reflection of your mental state and it works both ways. A messy space keeps your nervous system slightly activated, always aware in some background way that things are out of order. A clear space lets you actually relax because there is nothing silently demanding your attention.

Ten minutes every evening. It is one of the smallest habits on this list and one of the ones you will feel the most immediately.

9. Go Outside Even Just For A Few Minutes

walk outside

Fresh air. A change of scenery. Even just stepping outside your front door and standing there for a few minutes.

Most of us, especially in summer when the heat keeps us inside all day, go entire days without actually being outside. And something happens to your mind when it stays in the same four walls for too long it starts to feel a little trapped, a little flat, a little more anxious than it needs to be.

The evening when the temperature finally starts to drop and the light turns softer is the best time for this. Even a ten-minute walk around your street does something that no amount of indoor relaxation can replicate. Your nervous system resets. Your perspective shifts slightly. The day starts to feel like something that is winding down rather than something still pressing on you.

Go outside. Your brain needs it even when you do not feel like it.

10. Protect One Hour That Has Zero Productivity Attached To It

This is non-negotiable. Every day needs at least one hour that is just for you not for goals, not for growth, not for self-improvement. Just for the actual enjoyment of being alive.

Call a friend. Watch something you genuinely enjoy without guilt. Cook something just because you felt like it. Listen to music and do nothing else at the same time. Rearrange your bookshelf for no reason. Sit with a cold drink and watch the evening happen outside your window.

We spend so much time optimizing our days that we forget to actually live in them. A reset routine that is only about discipline and productivity is just a different kind of exhaustion. Joy is not a reward you earn after finishing your to-do list. It is something you are allowed to have simply because it is your life and you deserve to enjoy it.

Protect this hour. Do not let the productive part of your brain talk you out of it. It is not optional.

11. Wind Down Like You Actually Mean It

Most of us do not wind down. We just wait until we are too tired to stay awake and then fall asleep with our phones still in our hands and the light still on.

A real wind-down is intentional. It is a signal to your body that the day is genuinely closing not pausing, not waiting, actually closing. Dim your lights if you can. Put your phone on do not disturb at least thirty minutes before you want to sleep. Do something quiet and slow. Let your nervous system shift gears rather than crashing from full speed into sleep.

The quality of your sleep is almost entirely determined by the thirty minutes before it. And the quality of your next morning is almost entirely determined by the quality of your sleep. The wind-down is not just a nice thing to add to your evening it is the foundation that the whole next day is built on.

Wind Down Like You Actually Mean It

12. Write Three Honest Sentences Before You Sleep

jourling at night

Not a full journal. Not a gratitude list with five things. Just three honest sentences about your day.

What actually happened today. How you actually felt. What you want tomorrow to look like.

That is it. Three sentences. Two minutes maximum. And yet this tiny habit does something quietly powerful it closes the day with intention instead of just letting it dissolve into sleep. It forces you to process rather than accumulate. And it means you go to sleep with a small, clear sense of what tomorrow is for instead of waking up already behind before the day has started.

I started doing this and the biggest thing I noticed was not some dramatic transformation it was just that my days started to feel more like mine. More seen. More intentional. Like I was actually paying attention to my own life instead of just living through it.

13. End The Day On Your Own Terms

The last thing you do before you sleep make sure it is yours.

Not a notification. Not someone else's content. Not a video that autoplays into another video into another hour gone. Something you chose, consciously, as the last thing you want in your mind before you close the day.

For me some nights it is music. Some nights it is a few pages of a book. Some nights it is just lying quietly in the dark and letting my thoughts settle without feeding them anything new. Whatever it is it is a choice, not a default.

The "that girl" reset does not end with a perfect morning. It ends with a night that belongs to you. A day that you lived with some intention, some awareness, some actual care for yourself from the moment you woke up to the moment you closed your eyes.

That is it. That is the whole thing. Not aesthetic. Not perfect. Just intentional.

Nobody's "that girl" routine looks like the ones on Pinterest. And honestly, the ones on Pinterest are not even real  they are a thirty second clip of someone's most curated morning, not their actual life.

Your version does not need a ring light or a matcha set or a perfectly made bed. It needs to be honest. It needs to be yours. And it needs to make you feel at the end of the day like you actually showed up for yourself instead of just getting through it. You can stat with one tiny upgrade

Start with two or three things from this list. Build from there. And if you want something to help you actually track your routine and stay consistent through the whole summer.

💬 Tell me in the comments which part of the day is hardest for you to keep a routine? Morning, afternoon, or night? I genuinely want to know.

Now go build your version. It does not have to be perfect. It just has to be real. ✨
